Health and Safety in the studio
There are health hazards associated with painting and drawing.
It is your responsibility when attending a workshop to adhere to all rules intended to keep you and others safe when working in the studio for the duration of the workshop.
It is my responsibility to remind you of my health and safety rules and to point out hazards when they occur.
Painting and drawing materials consist of pigments mixed with various vehicles such as water, oil, wax, egg yolk, casein, resins and solvent solutions. The primary hazard in standard painting techniques is the accidental ingestion of pigments due to eating or drinking while working with paints. Ingestion may occur through inadvertent hand-to-mouth contact or by pointing the tip of the brush with the lips.
Water-based paints include watercolor, acrylic and gouache. Water is used for thinning and cleanup.
When attending a workshop you the participant agree to adhere to the following safety precautions when working with paint and drawing materials.
Only commercially bought paints can be used during my workshops. This is especially important as it means we will have names of manufacturers who can be contacted for an ingredient list if required.
Paints containing Lead are not permitted.
Dry pigments are not permitted.
Never use lips to point the end of the paintbrush;
Eating and drinking are allowed in the studio at your own risk.
Dishes, containers, or utensils from the kitchen may not be used to mix or store paints
Paints may only be thinned, mixed and cleaned with water.
Emergency eyewash is available in case of eye irritation
Painting knives, pencils, ends of brushes can all be sharp and cause injury. Always carry drawing and painting implements carefully and only when needed.
End.
